Happy Monday!

Here’s everything you need to know about Teacher AI this week.

On the menu today:

  • AI Vocabulary Word of the Week 🔡

  • Teacher AI News & New Tools 🗞️

  • 3 AI Tools to Try Out

  • Prompt of the Week

Hi wonderful teachers!

This past week I presented at Sequoia Con, a virtual conference for teachers about AI. It was so awesome, I learned a TON from all of the other presenters!

Here is a link to my slides - feel free to go through them or use them as inspiration if you have to create your own presentation! I focused on what school leaders should know about AI, but overall it was a pretty high-level view that could be useful for anyone.

Let’s get into it!

AI Vocabulary Term of the Week 🔡

AI Bias

Definition:

Refers to an AI system's tendency to make decisions or predictions that are prejudiced due to flawed assumptions in the machine learning (training) process.

Example:

  • Hiring Tools: Some companies use AI-driven tools to screen resumes and predict the suitability of candidates for job roles. If the training data for such a system includes a historical bias towards certain demographics (e.g., preferring male candidates for technical roles), the AI might unjustly favor those demographics, perpetuating the bias.

Remember to evaluate any tool you use for bias!

News & Updates in Teacher/Tech AI 🗞️

  • More universities and colleges are offering AI-specific degrees.

  • The rise of AI-specific associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and PhD programs comes as companies are short on this talent and half of the highest-paid skills in technology are AI-specific, according to Indeed.

  • This isn’t new, but with AI degree awards sharply increasing over the past decade, and a grounding in computer science, mathematics and engineering fundamentals remains critical.

  1. 3 AI Imperatives for Schools in 2024

    •  Highlights include how teaching responsible AI usage will be critical as complex issues increase, that institutions must take AI training for staff seriously, and that advancing AI literacy will empower innovation in both teaching and learning (which I couldn’t agree with more).

3 AI Tools I’ve Been Loving

  1. Humy.ai has released automated assignments and feedback right into the app. There is a free trial and paid version accessible. Try it out to spice up your history lessons!

  2.  Magicschool.ai ‘s free YouTube video question generator came in clutch this week when I used it to plan for a sub as a way to keep students engaged while watching a video.

  3. School.ai was the focus of a presentation by my friends Matt Karabinos (@Mr.K_all_day) and Larisa Black (@teachwiseai). Super cool program where you can create chatbots specifically for your students!

Prompt (Framework) of the Week - the PREPare method from The AI Educator (Dan Fitzpatrick) via Karle Delo

I was fortunate enough to be in the audience of Karle’s presentation at Sequoia Con this past Friday. She is an exceptional expert in AI and tech (especially Google Suite) for educators and creates super helpful content on Tiktok. She brought The AI Educator’s PREPare framework to light during her presentation and had us create our own prompts using it, and the possibilities were truly endless! I highly recommend giving it a try next time you use your favourite LLM.
